Tarangire National Park

Where Elephants Roam Among Ancient Baobabs

Eight distinct ways to experience one of Tanzania's most intimate and wildlife-rich national parks.

The Park

Tanzania's Best-Kept Secret

Tarangire National Park is home to the largest elephant herds in Tanzania. During the dry season, up to 3,000 elephants converge on the Tarangire River, the park's single permanent water source, creating wildlife concentrations that rival any park on the continent.

The landscape is defined by ancient baobab trees, some over 1,000 years old, whose twisted silhouettes frame every game drive. With over 550 recorded bird species, including Tanzanian endemics found nowhere else on Earth, and far fewer visitors than the Serengeti, Tarangire delivers a more intimate, unhurried safari experience.

Planning

When to Visit Tarangire

Tarangire rewards visitors year-round, but the character of the park shifts dramatically between wet and dry seasons.

Dry Season

June to October

Peak Wildlife

The Tarangire River becomes the only water source for miles, drawing thousands of elephants, buffalo, wildebeest, and zebra. Vegetation thins, making wildlife easier to spot. This is the best time for game drives and walking safaris.

Green Season

November to May

Best Birding

Migratory birds arrive from Europe and northern Africa, pushing the species count past 550. The landscape turns lush green, calving season brings newborns, and fewer visitors mean a more private safari experience. Ideal for birding expeditions and photography.

Night Drives

Year-round

Exclusive

One of only a few northern circuit parks to permit night drives. Encounter aardvarks, civets, servals, and the big predators at their most active. Available exclusively to guests staying at the camp.
